My personal history about the wall: some coincidences

In 1987 I visited West and East Berlin. A friend and I drive through the GDR from Rostick to West Berlin where we stayed for a few days. We took the opportunity to make one day visit to East Berlin and feel how it was to be in a so called "comunist" country. We drive around the city, visited The Pergamon and had lunch in the telespargel (TV towel).
I took some pictures from both sides of the famous wall.

The 9 November 1989 the East German government announced that all GDR citizens could visit West Germany and West Berlin. Crowds of East Germans crossed and climbed onto the wall, joined by West Germans on the other side in a celebratory atmosphere. Although the fall of the wall was expected, the day of the incident was a surprise to everyone.

Coincidentally, that day I was flying back home to Sweden from Cuba where I had been for 10 days. At home people was interested of knowing the opinion of the Cuban government about the fall of the wall. Unfortunately I couldn't answer that question as I was literally in the air at the time of the events.

In 2010 I had the opportunity come in contact with a young German student at the university in Lund. He was looking for a place to live and I offered a room for a few months. It was the first (and only) time I have had an unknown person in my house. I learned that he was born in East Germany and at the age of three, in 1987, he emigrated to the West Germany with his parents and his one year older sister. After having migrated though many cities in Germany and after finishing high school he come to Sweden with his parents, who eventually migrated to Schweitz. He decided to stay. Despite our differences in age and experiences we manage to become close friends and now, after more than four years, we share the house and the love to literature, art, culture, swim, nature and good food.

When I decided to make a "comment" about the fall of the wall I used my old photographs of Brandenburg Gate from both sides of the wall and a photography of my dear friend who seems to walk through both sides of Berlin without noticing it.

Because he is one of the migrants from East to West I decided to dedicate this work to him: Clemens Conrad.
