Lo que el agua me dio, o Lo que vi en el agua, 1939
What the water gave me, or What I saw in the water
Oil on canvas, 91x70,5 cm

In the years 1937-38, Kahlo’s paintings show a thematic preoccupation with motherhood. The bathtub environment is the womb, which was for the artist a source of both pleasure and pain. As a result of the car accident in the youth of Frida she became disabled to have children, which she deeply regretted.

Frida stated that tha painting was "an image of passing time…about time and childhood games in the bathtub and the sadness of what had happened to her in the course of her life".

In the years 2012 and 2013 Lorena's life was focused on motherhood. In February 2014 she gave birth to a son, three weeks ahead of schedule. His arrival was the greatest event in her life, enjoying every second of been a mother. In the afternoon mother and son usually take a bath before the baby goes to sleep.

The water in this case is clean and transparent. Unlike the painting of Frida in this image there no fragments of bygone times, dark thoughts or distress. All is joy and a bright future.
