THE CUCKOO

Poem written in prison during
the military dictatorship in Argentina 1976-1982
Y las agujas del reloj
se multiplicaron
girando una hacia un claro callejón
y otra hacia un enorme laberinto
sin paredes ni señales,
dos direcciones, dos tiempos,
un ir y venir
en la esfera del péndulo,
viajando con fuerza.
Multiplicando tiempo.
apenas una imagen borrosa
ampliándose en el espacio sin rostro.
Y prologando el sonar de las campanas
de las horas trascendentes
el cucú, en el bullicio reinante
pegó su grito afónico,
el de aquellos
que no saben si parten o regresan.
And the hands of the watch
multiplied
one turning to a bright alley
and the other to a huge labyrinth
without walls or signs,
two directions, two times
a coming and going
in the sphere of the pendulum,
travelling with force
Multiplying time,
just a blurred image
expanding in the faceless space.
And prefacing the sound of the bells
of the transcendent hours
the cuckoo, in the prevailing noise
gave a dumb shout,
that of those
who doesn’t know if they are leaving
or coming back.
